It took a bit to load, but not any more than XP ever did on my old HP. As soon as I got into it, everything I would do would cause some sort of pop-up where I had to approve of the program opening, or installing, or this or that. Thing is, even this message wasn't consistent. There was 2 or 3 different versions of this confirmation window. So, I installed some stuff, restarted a few times, ran that compatibility scorer (It got a 5 - The RAM was the lowest score). The internet functioned, everything seemed ok. I was able to get back to some of the 'classic' looks and menus, however lots of things couldn't be changed. I went looking for add/remove programs to clean out some of the vaporware that comes on every new computer. Low and behold, they've changed the names of much of the different sections within the control panel. Add/remove was gone entirely and resituated as some sort of question in the corner of the window "Do yo want to remove programs?" Yes, you cock, how helpful are you going to be? Anyway, I delete some useless shit, like WinDVD for example, and pull some of the windows operations like windows movie maker (Why would I use that over Premier?) So I restart to complete the changes and look at that, all of the network connections don't work. Theres no indication of a problem, in fact they all appear to be moving packets and pinging just fine. But nothing comes through.
The other thing that really bothered me was that they removed the disk defragmenter and replaced it with a standby operation that just tries to defragment as soon as you aren't installing something. One thing I absolutely hate is when the hard drive is constantly clicking away. To me, its just accelerated wear and tear one the long term memory of my little scientist here. I swear to god, it never stopped accessing the disk drive the whole time I was using it. It wouldn't last two years going non-stop like that. The defragging thing also started working my externals which, for the same reasons, I don't like. Even if you tell the program not to defrag unless you ask it to, it still pokes around. Worst of all, the program can't be exited.
Long story short, I'm not sold at all, I really don't want to learn a whole not UI like I did when I installed 95 for the first time, or 98, or XP. I've not had an issue with XP itself in almost 2 years now, so I'm happy to stick with it.

Plus, litestep is super rad and the result is tat my desktop is too.

Scientology!

So this guy runs this website called XenuTV and he follows Scientology around. Anyways, you may have noticed in the news about a car crash in florida, happened a couple days ago. Well it was one of the forum kids. creepy, because he said he was going to find a spot for a high speed run, and everyone was like, well, be careful you know.

Article on Jalopnik

So the situation is this: Basically, take 5 (thats right, five) KIDS.. driver 18, passengers of 18, 19, 19, and 20.... put them in a 500hp 2008 M5 (V10)... get them on the runway near john travoltas house.. get the car up to probably 155 no problem.. maybe higher if de-limited.. maybe even 180.. I mean the car can do 211 or something preposterous.. and then the questions start..

The car exited the runway and hit a tree 15ft up from the ground... 200 ft away. The runway was 85ft above the ground level of the tree. Its like bad physics question.

assume:
car has 500hp/potential top speed of 211mph.
car wieghs 4000lbs.
5 occupants, assume 180lbs per occupant
Impact is 15ft up from ground level 85ft below runway surface

So you've got a 70ft fall over 200ft. Thats like a trajectory of 21 degrees or something.

now you all know my math skills sucks, but I think someone ran out of stopping room at 70mph and flew off a cliff.

Meanwhile it made it to jalopnik, but there is an eerily appropriate ad that plays to the left of it. check it out.

Oh, this should be good.

Garmin is releasing a phone!

NuviPhone

Here are the basics so far, as its not on their site, no availability or pricing yet:

Quad band GSM, 3G + HSDPA, 3.5" touchscreen, WiFi, html browser, IM client for multiple networks(pidgin/trillian-esque), boatload of google apps preset, and obviously, GPS in classic garmin form.

Now, I'm just throwing it out there, but I love Garmin. I remember talking to them at interbike, they have some people like us working there.. willing to throw out ideas. Have you seen the Garmin 705? It's all the features of the 305 bike one, but this time with a color screen. It has a miniSD card to load maps. Interacts with powermeters. has real mapping options.

Now I notice that the so-far spec list does not include a camera, but I can see the zoom and capture button right on the case, so thats there. I am betting there will be a geotagging option too, which I am really becoming a big fan of. Its a nice combo of things, I'm using it on the Flickr and its neat. Especially since its combined with google and has sat view...anyways.

I would also imagine a removable media slot - a lot of those garmins have mp3 capability that way.

Damn. They were saying its the iPhone killer. We've already determined many phones did that a while ago.

This one is just cool.
<img width='1' height='1' KSC
Chairperson dei gratia, Flat Earth Society

1) What is the Earth's shape?

The Earth is flat. It is shaped in the form of a pentagon, and thus has
five corners.

2) What is the "middle corner"?

If one was to draw a line from each corner to the centre of the opposing
side of the Earth, the line would intersect in the middle of the Flat
Earth. This place is known as the Middle Corner.

3) Hey, wait a minute, that is not a real corner...

So? The equator of the spherical earthers is an imaginary line as well.
Does this mean that their model does not have a northern and a southern
hemisphere? You cannot count in imaginary numbers, but does that mean
that they do not exist?

4) What about the northern and southern hemisphere?

Spherical-earthist rot. This implies the Earth being a SPHERE, which it
is not. The Earth has, however, an Inner and Outer Ring.

5) Does the "middle corner" prove that 5=6?

Yes.

6) How are continents located on the Flat Earth.

Generally, the "southernmost" continents are on the outside, whereas the
"northern" ones are on the inside.

7) Does this mean that the Middle Corner is at the North Pole?

Not necessarily. It may be anywhere in the northern part of the Earth.

8) What is, then, at the south pole?

The Edge of the World. It is surrounded by a huge mountain range.

9) Does this fit in with the Hollow Earth theory?

Yes. Beneath the Earth, or hanging off the edges, is a land populated by
either green-skinned women or Nazis. All those claiming to have seen
this have misinterpreted it to fit in with the spurious and false
Spherical Earth theory.

10) Did H. P. Lovecraft know about the Flat Earth?

Yes. Read _At the Mountains of Madness_. The choice of the South Pole by
the Old Ones makes more sense with the Flat Earth Theory.

11) What about gravity?

Lies, all lies. There is no gravity, only inertia. The Earth moves
through space like a giant elevator. We do not fall off because we are
kept down by inertia. The Earth has inertia.

12) How does the Earth move through space?

There are two schools of thought: one which states that the Earth is
constantly moving in a straight line, and the other which states that
the Earth is moving in a toroidal shape. There is a popular opinion
which states that the Earth does not move as such, but rather that space
moves around the Earth.

--

Music on ball bearings?

This might be the smoothest running sequencer around. Look up some of the websites - A couple I looked at were the Spy Lounge or Anatomy, both of which are "ultralounges" (I'm guessing lounge atmosphere with dance music, dance floor, etc.)
As for the area, it seems to be old warehouses/industrial converted into loft apartments and nice city living. We should have no problem getting laid, ha. We should find a hotel near enough that we can walk, or maybe take some sort of back roads. I doubt we'll be dressed to ride over, plus it'll probably be way to cold.
Anyway, so check it out homies.

Advertising, cool like

Came across this ad on adviewr.com for the Treo from a while ago. You can find out more about it's origin here. The nature of this work inspired this lighting solution as a sort of "home gallery".

I have a flashlight from a company called Inova [parent company Emissive Energy Corporation]. They started off pretty small, offering just a couple lights, one of which we carried back when I worked for Chase-Pitkin. I see now that they've grown into a respectable business making products for Victorinox and military/law enforcement applications.

Anyway, I'm getting off track (probably because their products are so awesome). The point is that the little flashlight I have, the X1 (old design) uses one AA battery and one LED combined with a brilliant lens to make a very concentrated spotlight beam, like nothing I have ever seen before in such a compact light. Granted, its not the best for forest navigation, but if you needed to stay relatively unseen, this light would allow you to do so. Now, if I could make a little wall or ceiling mounted unit with one, two, three, or as many light sources as required, I could spot out different items in a given space. It would be almost invisible in terms of overall room lighting, but would add additional light to specific points - just like any spotlight.

So how does this tie in with that art work? Well, like I said - home gallery. This print caused me specifically to visualize one item called out in an environment, like the way the light shines on the house. Imagine if you had a few small pieces of artwork about your space, be it sculpture or a wall print, you could spot them out with a very unobtrusive light source. Even with the room lights off they would hardly light a room on their own while doing their job. You would need to be able to control the brightness and spot diameter to perfect its effect. I see this as something I would use in both the lounge as well as my own room, or living room. It could have so many uses, as I begin to think of it. In my living room, for example, I could put a dim spot on my A/V equipment for easy control in a dark room without it necessarily affecting the required darkness for movie/tv viewing. If done right, with full adjustments, this multipurpose light would be so infinitely useful for so many things.

Integrated lighting solutions

Here are a couple ideas I've had lately.

one
I've been having trouble falling asleep lately. I've been restless. I lay down, and feel my heart racing and my breaths coming at intervals way to close. My eyes don't stay shut.
Last night, I wished there was water flowing all around me. So my idea here was to have a really dark [dim] blue light or something with some sort of water effect projected all around my bed's area. It would of course be dark [dim] enough that it would not effect my ability to fall asleep, but it would create the necessary shadows to give a watery effect to my surroundings. I honestly don't know why water came to me, or why I came do desire it so confidently last night, but it became absolutely necessary to me last night. I fell asleep really frustrated as a result. This caused my sleep to be light. I woke up quickly and abruptly at the sound of my alarm. Awake as I was, it was not the result of total rest, rather the effect of a short, light nap.
Now, I would ideally like to tie this idea into an alarm. 10 minutes before my alarm wakes me up, the light needs to be off so that I can wake up rather than be coaxed back into sleep. This might also be achieved by a light sensor, but depending on the weather and when I get up, that is an unreliable switch. Another thought is just to use one of those timers you can put on any plug and set it to turn on at like 11 or midnight or something and turn off at about 6am. I only wake up earlier than that for special circumstances so a daily time like that is probably totally acceptable.

two
the spotlighing, will be continued later, in another installation.

New ones!

I had more ideas today for more renditions of this thing, so I edited the other one and made another one. These images are all a bit different in X/Y proportions so the tubing one outwieghs the rest (also because it has no negative space). All in all it didn't turn out too bad, but we need to take some pictures to really make it fly.

Nerd Alert!

Alright, so its what, 1:45pm? Little did I know, it's already here.
It's a tablet PC made by a company called Paceblade from the netherlands. The Slimbook d220 has a screen that works via digitizer pen (active digitizer/mad accurate drawing/pressure sensitive for line weight) or a resistance digitizer (like my Treo/general touch input with any object). So far, my only complaint with it is the screen's resolution - It's XGA which means 1024x768. These days, I'd expect a much better resolution - at least WXGA. That being said, it's a 12.1" screen, which is pretty small, so that is probably a pretty comfortable resolution.
The biggest downside - it's $4,000usd.

From the PDF Brochure :
"The new SlimBook 200 series is the next generation of our successful
slimbook line. The three innovative models of the SlimBook 200 series are
designed to enhance productivity for mobile professionals by offering a
computing solution that functions in the field as well as on the desk.
The SlimBook 200 series combines the power of Intel Mobile Core Duo
Technology with the new Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate operating system
in a sleek lightweight form factor that can be carried about as easily as a pad
of paper, but features the full functionality of a top-of-the-line PC . It represents
the fastest Slate Tablet PC on the market today.
The SlimBook 200 series offers a 12.1” LCD dual mode screen that switches
between active digitizer (pen) and touch screen input. This technology was first
introduced to the market by PaceBlade years ago on its famous PaceBook
series. Additional features include four user-programmable buttons, biometric
fingerprint reader, Bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity, eSATA support, a Type II
PCMCIA slot for expansion possibilities and Harddrives that starts at 160GB.
Powerful Mobility
The PaceBlade SlimBook 200 series are state-of-the-art Tablet PCs designed
for mobile professionals and are known for their attractive, lightweight design
and large 12-inch ‘Wide Angle View” display with 160° viewing angle.
The SimBook supports instant screen rotation that provides the possibility to
switch so that you can switch from portrait to landscape mode without
restarting your computer.
The SlimBook 200 series is powered by Intel Core Duo or Intel Celeron
Mobile Technology processor for ultimate speed and processing efficiency.
Resistive Touch Function
The PaceBlade SlimBook 200 series is supported by a wide range of
accessories to create the ultimate configuration and usage, for instance our
grab-and-go docking station for quick mobility. In a nut shell, they are opening their network to everybody. Yeah, so every CDMA phone ever can work on their network. All they have to do is certify it. I guess that means one can even go so far as to make a phone on a breadboard in their basement, and as long as it meets certain test criteria it will be allowed on the network. Anyway, here's the full article.

Verizon Opens Up via Ars Technica

UPS is here!

...And so is my first rapid prototype.

lets hope it works.

Colors

Here is the question:
More color or less color?

Done right, black and white can be better than the coolest thing you can imagine.
Then again, a little bit of color is sweet too. Pretty interesting film methodology. He's created a very unique look and sound to his films which seems to add a default level of humor despite the subject matter. Here is an excerpt from his Wikipedia article.

McLaren was born in Stirling, Scotland, where he studied set design at Glasgow School of Art. His early experiments with film and animation included actually scratching and painting the film stock itself, as he did not have ready access to a camera. His earliest extant film, Seven Till Five (1933), a "day in the life of an art school" was influenced by Eisenstein and displays a strongly formalist attitude. McLaren's next film, Camera Makes Whoopee (1935) was a more elaborate take on the themes explored in Seven Till Five, inspired by his acquisition of a Ciné-Kodak camera, which enabled him to execute a number of 'trick' shots. McLaren used pixillation effects, superimpositions and animation not only to display the staging of an art school ball, but also to tap into the aesthetic sensations supposedly produced by this event.

Neighbours

Grand Central - A Google thing

I'm behind on the times. This happened in july, but I just got the info from gmail, which I check daily, so it can't be that bad.

The principle is pretty neat. Basically you can select your own number, incorporate all of your other numbers, and google/grand central handles the rest for you. this means, for us, that like, should you switch carriers and maybe have a number change - you dont actually. People will call your number, and it will go wherever you want it to. It also offers nifty options: a visual voicemail, like what apples got. This one is more intense though - you have options to listen in as the caller is leaving a message, and even interrupt them and take the call. But lets say its a telemarketer (as I have been dealing with at all hours and days of the week here)- even without a number showing on my phone, they can take the root number, and block it. Thats right folks, finally, you'll be able to selectively block numbers from coming in. That, is the best. Same for text messages.

What else... well, they hare giving these numbers to the homeless in an attempt to allow places to leave messages for them. Family members, doctors, possible job opps. The goal is, said homeless person can 'acquire' a quarter, call their number, and hear any messages they have - with no phone service or carrier needed. Because google helps take care of that.

Anywho, right now its a pretty limited thing. I signed up. Hell, all it is right now is getting on a waiting list. The palm over all has a larger form factor; 10" screen, higher res, weighs a half pound more. Both run linux, and palm even intended for third party apps to be developed (thats why they chose linux). Asus is a cool company which is all for that as well. Apple? Microsoft? Care to let the people have some fun with your products?
I feel bad for palm. For some reason, everybody hates them these days. Fact is, their products have always been way ahead of their time. Its only recently that their smart phones are seeming slightly out dated, but they've been solid performers for like 4 years now - all the while with touch screens! That's not new technology people! Anyway, so the Foleo came out and everyone was like "thats gay!" The EEPC is the EXACT SAME PRINCIPAL and everyone is shitting in their pants for it. I will not deny that, from a hardware standpoint, they did a better job. Palm always seems to air on the light side when they spec out hardware, however the stuff works for it's intended purposes.
Apple's got the same thing going as Asus, but even more-so. They can make anything and just because they're a 'cool' company, their products will almost always succeed. This is a bit more recent of a development - the Newton (their old PDA) fail pretty bad back in the day - But, they hadn't come to be the coolness they are now. You know why I hate apple's touch stuff? It's fingers only. It works on capacitance (electrical charge of your finger effecting the screen) in the same way that a touch lamp or your mouse pad on a laptop do. The WACOM technology that palm and many other tablets utilize works from a pinpoint accurate sensor. Honestly, I don't even know how the technology works. Point is, I can draw pictures with my stylus (which I carved out of wood) on my Treo, but I couldn't do that with an iPhone or similar unless I carved my finger into a point. I don't want to carve my finger into a point.

Everyone is a whore. I guess that's where I'm going with this.

OLPC gets a little closer

One laptop per child for $100 blah blah blah... price doubles, doubles again, whatever.

I want this, and I'm going to get one soon.

NewEgg's got 'em for $399. quite a way back, but I think it was in like 10th grade when we had a message board at like freebb.com or something. It was for Jordan, Ryan, Steve, Mike, Myself, and I think like Beth Costigan and Michelle Grimm were on it for a time too. There was a brief period when we would use it all the time and it was magical, so hard. I think the girls are what ruined it.
Anyway, this really has nothing to do with that. But what this is is hopefully just a good place to gain perspectives. Everybody always hates having tons of blogs and shits to read, so having one for everyone in the 'group' (whatever that realistically constitutes) will be good. Also, it doesn't require meetings or anything, you can just post something and we'll tell you what we think.

As far as lighting solutions goes, that was kind of a joke between john and I but we started to use the term whenever we were discussing an innovative, good solution for something. Then this light bulb popped up in my head (getit?lol) and I decided to use the term for the rest of everything forever.

Also; There's just something about this woman. Found it on the computer at the bike shop. Just wondering why I was invited to this blog. I have no idea what the fuck john is talking about although his picture entertained me for the better part of a minute. Is it that you want my incredible wonderful adivce on everything? I'll give you my input: I enjoy lights, but even more I enjoy darkness. I suggest the "Lighting Solution" is no light at all. I bet you didn't see that coming. If it really bothers you, you could try night vision. As I am in art class right now, I have infinite time to do nothing. It's a blast. Anyway, I'm going to albany this weekend to visit matt. THat's all. bye.

carbon fivebeer... oiy.

I, am at work. I like work. It's fun.

Today, I am evaluating some things.

We have an intake system from an Audi B7 RS4.
We have a rapid prototyped SLA model of the upgrade.
We have a carbon fiber version of the SLA.

Time to compare and contrast and make sure everything is kosher for production.

Sorry for the angle.
Left to right we have the carbon fiber model, the SLA model, and the OEM version, with box attached.

Stock= boring
SLA= worked, but all the mounts are wrong.
Carbon= hoping it will work. Need to check again its .sldprt file.

I begin with the basics. Open up the file, add carbon as material, and some lighting to see it better.

Well, this led to measuring the stock box for comparison, then measuring the SLA, and the carbon, for all the checking of things and such. This was going well, tolerances were dead on on the drawing compared to the OEM.... but the acrbon was off a little.

After two hours of detailing everything, the big one hit. The drawing has a major flaw that renders the file useless.... and it was the last thing i checked. goddamn.

thats all for now.

Introduktion

So this is the same basic idea as Nate's Think Puppy, but for the other side of my world.
I hope to see discussion on design, engineering, technology, bikes, and jokes.
Of course, the most important thing, is that this can be used as a forum to stimulate ideas and plan innovation.
This is a community for ingenuity.

Top 1000 80's

List from a torrent:

10CC - FEEL THE LOVE
A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS - THE MORE YOU LIVE, THE MORE YOU LOVE
A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS - WISHING I HAD A PHOTOGRAPH OF YOU
A HA - STAY ON THESE ROADS
A HA - TAKE ON ME
A HA - THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
A HA - THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV
ABBA - ONE OF US
ABBA - SUPER TROOPER
ABBA - THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME
ABBA - THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL
ABC - ALL OF MY HEART
ABC - POISON ARROW
ABC - THE LOOK OF LOVE
ABC - WHEN SMOKEY SINGS
ACE OF BASE - ALL THAT SHE WANTS
ACE OF BASE - THE SIGN
ADAM ANT - GOODY TWO SHOES
ADAM ANT - STAND AND DELIVER
ADRIAN GURVITZ - CLASSIC
AEROSMITH &
